In You Light also Shines

My first real piece of art on nice paper since my month-ish-long artblock. I desperately needed to draw one of my characters in order to get back into the swing of things. I figured it was a good chance to teach you more about Helaeyen, my city wolf character. 

As you may know, Hel was a hotheaded pup until a near-death experience completely changed his outlook on life. A colony of magic fireflies brought him back from the dead and gave him the power to heal others. Since then, Helaeyen's become a sort of icon among the wolves in the area. Wolves in need come to him for healing and for a home.

One day, when Helaeyen lead a few friends on a reindeer hunt, an arial hunter began shooting at the wolf pack, particularly at a very young pup in the group. To their immense surprise, it was a REINDEER that came to the pup's aid, shielding her from the bullets and taking a few in her place. It was that encounter that taught Helaeyen and the other city wolves that other animals, not just wolves, have feelings and souls. That reindeer was the first non-canine animal to be healed and to be given a place among the city wolves. 

Of course wolves still have to eat, so obviously Helaeyen and the pack still hunt for food. They heal prey animals on very rare occasions, but the whole ordeal taught them to appreciate the life around them all the more. 



I'm quite happy with the piece itself. I'm trying to practice backgrounds because I feel as though that's definitely one of my weaker points as an artist. The colors are pretty smooth here. The perspective is convincing enough. I'm happy.

Done with watercolor, colored pencil, copic marker (my first drawing with them!) , and some other stuff. Mixed media as usual.
